Tosa Rules

U9 and U10 Soccer
  • There is no offside at these ages!
  • Generally, we will not use assistant referees anymore for U9 or U10 games.
  • There direct and indirect free kicks at this level and there are penalty kicks.
U8 Soccer
  • We will use certified referees at the U8 level.
  • No assistant referees will be used - have parents help alerting you when the ball is out of bounds, bring your flags.
  • 4 - 12 minute quarters; 2 minute break between periods and 5 minute break at halftime.
  • Switch direction of teams at halftime.
  • Get voucher from coach before the game.
  • "Officially" check in the players before the game - 5 minutes before kick-off.
  • Let player retake throw-ins if they do it poorly - instruct them as to what they did wrong.
  • All free kicks are indirect; explain to the player why you stopped the game.
  • Safety first! Especially around the goalkeeper.
  • No free kicks taken within the goal area. If there is a violation by the defending team within their own goal area, place the ball on the line parallel to the end line closest to where the foul occurred. THERE ARE NO PENALTY KICKS!
  • Be courteous - parents aren't used to having referees at this level. If a player gets hurt, be quick to stop the game and let the coach tend to their player. Restart the game with a drop ball. You can substitute at an injury.
  • U8 soccer uses 4 field players plus a goalkeeper.
  • Substitutions: Coaches are encouraged to sub at the quarter breaks but they may sub at any goal kick, corner kick, throw-in, restart, injury - by either team. REMIND EACH TEAM BEFORE THE GAME THAT THEY CAN SUB ON EITHER TEAMS STOPPAGES. Subbing on free kicks is allowed.
  • Whistle fouls! Don't just let them "play on!"
